Hair Salon Visit

Q: What is the best day of the week and time for a hair salon visit? What is the optimal day and time for the best cut and coloring service?

A: That greatly depends on what kind of service you prefer.

Lots of hair salons, (especially smaller non-commercial, family-run salons), are closed on Sundays or Mondays. There are two reasons for this:

1. Salons are extremely busy over weekends, so the staff are exhausted after busy Fridays, Saturdays and even Sundays.

This is why lots of salons aren't open for business on Sundays and Mondays; to give their staff a well deserved break and time to rest and recuperate before starting all over again in the new week.

2. Most salons do their stock-take on Mondays. The junior staff will then come in for a few hours to count order and restock the hair color, shampoo and conditioner, and other chemicals, as well as spring-clean the salon to prepare for another busy week.

Mid-week days (Tuesday, Wednesday) tend to be slower days. The stylists and staff are more relaxed, and tend to book more than enough time for each client. If you’re a person who likes lots of personal attention and endless chatting with your stylist, this will probably be the best time to visit your salon.

End-week days tend to become progressively busier. Thursdays and Fridays speed up with an influx of clients who want to look good over the weekend, often for special occasions such as trips abroad or going away for a couple of days. The atmosphere in the salon is usually brisk but still pleasant.

Stylists and staff have to work quicker during these days, but still have time and inclination to spend extra time on socializing with the clients. If you like to share stories with your stylist but don’t want to spend hours at the salon, this is the best time to book your appointment.

Saturdays and sometimes Sundays are like a well-organized cyclone in a salon. Everyone works at maximum speed and efficiency, because there’s a HUGE influx of clients that can only have their hair done over the weekend. The salon has to fit in as many clients as possible into very limited time slots, thus you will often find that more than three or four people will work with your hair during your appointment.

You’ll often be treated to lengthy massages at the basin when your hair is washed or the color gets rinsed. The stylist will instruct the shampoo-girl or apprentice to keep massaging until he/she has finished up with his/her other clients.

The stylists have to delegate during these days, so one person will do the washing, another will dress you with your cape and towels, the stylist will do the actual cutting, coloring or styling, while an apprentice might end up blow-drying your hair afterward, with the stylist pitching in the last five or ten minutes to add his/her finishing touch.

You won’t get as much one-on-one time with your stylist during this time, but if you like a fast paced and optimal time-efficiency environment, this is the best time for you to visit the salon.
