Hair Nightmares

Q: Why do so many women have hair nightmares? I hear so many hair horror stories and it makes me wonder whether the things that go wrong are the client’s or the hair salon’s fault. So many women are unhappy after a haircut or a new hair color …

A: This question has so many answers… all depending on specific situations. There are, however, a few factors that are so common that I’ll mention it here as food for thought.

Firstly, women tend to have unrealistic expectations regarding the actual change that it will bring into effect when you change your hairstyle. For example, you may have your dull hair colored to a vibrant blonde, have extensions put in to make it longer and thicker and ask your stylist to style your new haircut into tumbling waves.

This does not mean that you’re going to end up looking like Candice Swanepoel, though. You’re more likely to end up looking like Kristie Alley on a bad hair day, which is probably not what you were looking for. When you go for a haircut, color, style change, please be realistic. Discuss your expectations with your stylist, especially if you’re going for a major change.

Secondly; get yourself a really good stylist that you get along with well, and stick to her/him for as long as possible. Each person’s hair is different, and the longer a stylist does a client’s hair, the better the stylist will be able to style, cut, and color that client’s hair. Over time, you will be building a trust relationship with your stylist, which helps immensely when you ask the stylist to make suggestions, give personal advice, etc.

Thus, sticking to a stylist ensures that you won’t end up in the chair of an inexperienced hairdresser, or a wacky, scissor happy one. It also ensures that you have a stylist that can listen to your personal challenges and successes while giving constructive criticism, while ending up looking fabulous as well.

Always try to avoid going to a hairstylist that you don’t know, especially if you don’t have any personal references regarding this stylist. The antagonist in most of these horror stories is more often than not either a super inexperienced hairdresser, or one that forces her/his opinion on what will look best down on the clients. This is not to say that a flop may happen when you go to your stylist that you’ve been going to for years, but the chances of this happening is diminished immensely.
