Bob or Pixie Cut Dilemma when over 50

Q: I recently turned 50, and I'm still wearing my hair long. Actually, I've had the same hairstyle since my twenties: straight, below the shoulders, and with blunt bangs that reach my eyebrows. I started coloring my hair (chocolate brown) when I was about 30. I think it's time for something new and shorter, and I'm debating between a short bob and a pixie cut.

I talked to my hairstylist about this. Although there's nothing wrong with wearing your hair long when you're older, she thinks I would look and feel better with short hair. She recommends a pixie cut for me, not the bob, but she may be biased. She herself sports a very short pixie cut, and it's evident that she prefers very short hairstyles. However, since she hasn't known me for long, I believe her opinion might be neutral. I've only recently become her customer because I moved a few months ago.

It would be great to get a second opinion. I have no issue with my long hair being cut short soon. On the contrary, a drastic makeover and a completely new look seem quite exciting to me. I have often dreamt of having short hair, but never had the courage to try it. My only dilemma is deciding between a short bob and a pixie cut. What do you think is better for a woman over 50: a bob or a pixie cut? What about bangs for a woman of my age?

A: Turning 50 is a wonderful time to embrace change and explore new possibilities, including a new hairstyle. It's good that you're open to trying something different. While I'd love to offer you some personalized hairstyle advice, it's impossible to give accurate recommendations without seeing what you look like in person. There are various factors to consider, such as your face shape, hair type, and personal style, which can greatly influence the best haircut for you. Your hairdresser, who has the advantage of seeing you in person, is best placed to help you make this decision.

Both the short bob and the pixie cut are fantastic options for women over 50. They can both be stylish, chic, and age-appropriate. A short bob is a versatile choice that can be customized to suit your face shape and hair texture. It can be worn straight, wavy, or with some added layers for volume and movement. A bob can be a great way to update your look while maintaining some length and versatility.

On the other hand, a pixie cut can be a daring choice that exudes self-confidence. It has the potential to completely transform your appearance and open up a whole new world. With the right cut and styling, a pixie cut can accentuate your facial structure and highlight your best features. A well-executed pixie cut can look incredibly refreshing and youthful. It can be incredibly freeing, both in terms of style and maintenance.

Considering your hairdresser's recommendation of a pixie cut, it's important to take her opinion into account. While it's true that she may have a personal preference for very short hairstyles, her suggestion might still hold value. As a professional who has worked with various clients, she likely has a good understanding of what styles suit different women. Since she hasn't known you for long, her opinion is likely to be more objective. Her fresh perspective, combined with her experience in the hair industry, could offer valuable insights.

If you do decide to go for a pixie cut, it's important to give your hairdresser the necessary freedom to create a contemporary and personalized style for you. While traditional pixie cuts are timeless, there are also modern variations that can be tailored to your specific features. Your hairdresser might suggest adding some choppiness, or incorporating other elements that match your new haircut. By trusting your stylist's expertise and allowing her to work her magic, you'll likely achieve a result that truly complements you and that you’ll love.

While bangs can be rejuvenating and add an element of playfulness to a hairstyle, it's worth considering whether keeping them at eyebrow length is the best choice for you. Discuss with your hairdresser the option of cutting them shorter or choppier to complement your pixie cut. Shorter bangs can help create a more modern and age-appropriate look, while still retaining the youthful energy you're seeking.

It's wonderful that you're open to change and excited about trying something different. Stepping outside of your comfort zone can be an empowering experience. Shortening your hair can be a great way to rejuvenate your appearance and give yourself a fresh start. Age should never limit your hairstyle choices. There are no hard rules about what is considered suitable for a particular age group. It's all about finding a hairstyle that makes you feel confident and reflects your personality.

I hope that this helps to address your dilemma between a short bob and a pixie cut. Both the bob and the pixie cut are excellent choices and can be adapted to suit you, while still looking fashionable and stylish. Given your stylist's preference for the pixie cut, I'm inclined to suggest you follow her advice. She knows what you look like and what type of hair you have, I don't.

Finally, keep in mind that hairstyles are not permanent, and hair grows back.
