Proper Eyebrow Color

Q: My question is: I have gray hair and brown eyes. What would be the proper eyebrow color? I've tried to use gray powder and it just doesn't look right. On the other hand, I don't know if brown is the one to choose either? Your help is most appreciated!

A: Unless there has been some dramatic development in hair coloring that I haven't heard of (and I do try to keep up with such things) there currently isn't anything on the market designed to give a truly realistic "gray hair" look.

We've lots of things to enhance gray, brighten and even cover the gray, but nothing that will take pigmented hair and make it look realistically gray. The products currently available are generally only used for stage and theatrical make-up applications where the viewer is expected to suspend belief to certain levels.

Your best bet is to try and stick to a color as close to your natural shade as possible. Unless your hair has gone completely white, the hairs that are still pigmented are most likely to be your natural color. If the natural color of the eyebrows feels too dark to you, you might speak to your stylist about lightening them slightly. I would really advice caution and consideration before attempting to lighten the eyebrows at home.

Since any lightening effect involves the use of bleaching agents, the potential for dripping into the eyes and subsequent eye damage is higher in a non-professional setting. Please acknowledge the risks and be realistic about your limitations.
