Bone Marrow for Perms

Below is a 1976 advertisement text for the La Maur Bone Marrow Perm. Written by E.O. Riddle, Director of Salon and Field Product Testing at La Maur Inc. The text explains why and how the concentrated solids of animal bone marrow are used to protect the hair when doing professional permanent waving.

Bone Marrow Most experts will agree that our modern salon industry owes its development directly to the introduction of early professional permanent waves. Movement in hair, with the ability to remain through several shampoos, was first made possible through the use of heat in conjunction with machine and machineless permanent waves. Eventually chemicals were developed which curled hair without the use of heat, thereby eliminating the need for cumbersome machinery, and the "cold wave" era began.

As curl and movement in hair became a more indispensable part of fashion, professional salons became a more indispensable service for modern women. As important as permanent waves have been to the industry, at times they have caused some undesirable side effects. The strong chemicals in perms often left hair dry, brittle, dull, and in some cases damaged. Even with the industry's introduction of new acid-balanced perms, this problem still exists to some extent.

Today a professional perm must do more than just curl hair. It must contain special buffers and conditioners to aid in moisturizing and reconditioning hair as it is being reconstructed bythe waving lotion and the neutralizer.

La Maur research chemists have always been innovative in the field of organic chemistry. Their interest in the condi tioning benefits of bone marrow dates back to the introduction of Organicore Perm and Conditioner in the mid-1960's.

Bone marrow is the soft, spongy part of the hollow inside bones. This hollow is called the medullary cavity. Bone marrow is red or yellow and is called cancellous tissue. Yellow bone marrow is mostly fat. Red bone marrow is a network of blood vessels, connecting tissue, and blood forming cells

... in fact, except for one variety of white cell, all cellular components of blood are manufactured by bone marrow, and blood is the llfestream of all animal life. Bone marrow consists of branch cells that lie deeply imbedded in a matrix of protein fibers consisting largely of collogen. It is composed of many other indispensable life substances, among which are nutrients, glucose. Tats, amino acids, sodium potassium and calcium, plus special proteins like fibrinogeh, albumin, and various globulins.

Incorporated into La Maur's new Bone Marrow Perm are the concentrated solids of animal bone marrow after the fat is removed and the water fraction is allowed to evaporate. These solids contain an abundant variety of essential life-giving ingredients, which have been scientifically formulated into a low pH waving lotion. Organically derived and molecularly small, these con ditioners have an affinity for hair and are rapidly sorbed by hair. During the perm processing they protect the hair by buffering the waving lotion, allowing it to reconstruct the hair with little or no damage. They aid in maintaining hair's essential moisture balance, which is so vital to healthy hair.
