Q: Is there any shampoo that will make my hair curlier? Are there maybe other hair products that will make my hair curl more without rollers or curling irons? There’s already a slight curl in my hair, but I want it to be curlier.

A: There are different ways and means to enhance the natural curl of hair. The most effective way in my opinion is to use a diffuser when you blow dry your hair. It takes a bit of practice to get it exactly the way your want it, but the results really are beautiful.

You basically apply a bit of heat protection cream and a little leave in conditioner to just-washed, wet hair. Put the diffuser on your hairdryer and stand with your hair upside down. Gently press the length of your hair into the mouth of the diffuser and let it rest there for an ample amount of time.

Your hair dryer should be on a low heat and airflow setting. If the airflow is too strong, the hair will just be blown all over the place. Once the section you’re busy with is dry enough, you can move on to the next section. The idea is to gently rest the hair on the diffuser until the hair is dry and curly.

You can watch some videos on YouTube to get a more in-depth idea of the process if you’re not familiar with the diffuser and how to use it. Most quality hair dryers are sold with the diffuser as an extra accessory.

There is also a very wide variety of shampoos and conditioners available at salons and supermarket isles. Curly and wavy hair with body and movement have been making a huge comeback the past few years, and you can be sure that the hair product manufacturers are capitalizing on this phenomenon by creating and distributing relevant hair-products, including shampoos, conditioners and styling products.

Another thing that you can do to enhance the curl and body of your hair is to add a few highlights. Lightening processes (highlights, blonde colors, etc.) decrease the ability of the hair shaft to hold moisture. If this is done correctly, the process will not compromise the health of your hair, but you hair will be curlier and have more volume.

This is because hair with less moisture curls very easily. Naturally curly hair is marginally drier than naturally straight hair hence it’s natural ability to curl. The flip-side of this is that all curly hair (natural or created) should be treated regularly to a moisture-rich treatment, to ensure your hair’s health and shine.

You really just have to start experimenting with the above-mentioned techniques, and find what works best for you. Practice makes perfect. You can also pay a visit to your hairdresser and get her opinion on which products your salon stocks, concerning hair products designed to enhance natural curls.
