Get Rid of Curls

Girl who doesn't like her curly hair

Q: I hate my curly hair. How short would I have to get it cut to get rid of the curls? How short does hair have to be to stop curling? My hair is almost shoulder length now? Would a pixie help?

A: Wow... You sound like you’re in really unhappy place concerning your tresses right now. In any case, I’ll try to give you the best of practical advice, and then I’ll throw in a pinch of some life-wisdom as well, just to seal it off, ok?

The basis of existence of curly hair is the combination of a coarser hair structure and a dry composition. In simplified essence; the coarser and drier the composition of the hair structure (the actual make-up of the hair); the more curly it will be. But; in apparent opposition to this rule, if you wet hair that has the natural tendency to curl, and leave it to dry on its own, it will curl even more tightly.

Thus in theory, even really short hair will curl if it is dry enough (light blonde hair is drier than darker hair, especially chemically processed blonde hair, meaning that it tends to curl more) and has the natural tendency to do so, and is left in a wet-state to dry on its own.

You can combat any curl in a number of ways. The most effective and long-term method is to have your hair chemically straightened at a professional hair salon by an experienced stylist. This is a relatively intense procedure to be done on your hair, so I seriously recommend going to a salon for this. These words are not meant to scare you, as countless people of all nationalities and ethnic backgrounds have their hair straightened daily. It’s a safe process when done at a salon; just DON’T attempt it at home.

Secondly, yes, you can cut your hair shorter, but be sure to blow-dry it daily. By blow-drying your hair, you can temporarily manipulate its structure and appearance. Shorter hair just blow-dries easier and quicker than long hair. Straightening irons make the process even quicker and more effective, albeit still temporarily, until it has been wetted again. Just make sure that you always use heat-protection when you apply any kind of heat-styling method to your tresses. This is important, remember it and keep by this rule.

How short you want to go depends on your personal preferences and what suits you best. Your stylist will be able to tell you what styles and colors will suit your facial structure and skin tone best. Shorter hairstyles take less time to blow-dry, but it might not be the most aesthetically pleasing hairstyle to complement your most stunning features.

Lastly, but probably most importantly, NEVER refer to hating any of your physical/characteristic features. You are uniquely breathtaking, and there will never be anyone who can fill your shoes quite as colorfully as only YOU can. I hope that you grow into your beauty and uniqueness, and that you’ll realize your own powerful rareness very soon.
