Copper Waves

There is an art to restraint, and this hairstyle has mastered it completely. At first glance, it might seem simpler than the elaborate feathered or jeweled styles of its era; but look more closely and you will discover a hairstyle of extraordinary precision and elegance. This is one of the most polished looks the early 20th century ever produced.
From the side, the architecture of the style is clearly visible. Starting from the forehead, the hair has been combed back in smooth, defined waves, each one pressing close to the head in a rhythmic S-curve. These waves flow backward and then transition seamlessly into a gathered arrangement at the back of the head, where the hair has been looped and coiled into a series of rounded curls.

The precision of the waves is remarkable. Each curve is clean and deliberate, pressed firmly against the scalp without a single strand out of place. The waves are not stiff or lacquered, however; they maintain a natural sheen and appear to have some softness and movement to them.
The front view reveals how the waves frame the face before sweeping back. The result is a silhouette that is sleek at the sides and full at the back. It is very much in keeping with the fashionable ideal of the early 1910s, when women were beginning to move away from the towering pompadours of the previous decade and toward something a little more streamlined.
A fur-trimmed wrap in cream sits at her shoulders and the deep green embroidered velvet dress adds a jewel-toned richness to the overall palette.
