Now that we have discussed what works for certain face shapes, let's discuss some things that can have a slimming effect for any face shape!

Do's:

Color, Lowlights, Highlights or Glaze:

Beautifying your hair with a subtle hint of color difference is always a good idea. Having a beautiful hair color never hurts. Adding in a lighter color around the face will not only give a slimmer appearance (the vertical colors elongate the shape of the face) but they also give a more youthful glow.

If you happen to have dull hair color, opt for warmer, rich-toned lowlights or a glaze to give it some extra shine and protection by sealing the cuticle.

Product:

Many people expect to just wake up and do a little brushing and think their hair will look good all day long. Most people do not realize how vital good products are to their hair. When you go to the salon and your stylist does your hair, they use products to create that style and you will need products to create the same style.

Styling products, like a good root boost, will give you volume in the areas that need it to help complement the areas of concern.

Layer it up:

Strategic layering is a key strategy for highlighting the features you like and concealing the ones you wish to downplay, and practically anyone can pull off layers. Adding some layers around the cheekbone area will highlight the bones and can soften any angular lines one may have. If you find yourself in need of a boost of volume, layers can also stack on top of one another and add height in the places needed.

Play up the Part:

Hairstylists often advise their clients not to fight nature and to go with their natural part, but you can "train" your hair to do just about anything (with time and work). You should avoid a center part if you have a round or heart-shaped face.

By parting your hair on the opposite side of your natural part, you will get a lot of volume at the bangs and crown area and thus a slimmer look in the face.

Angled Bob:

The angled shape (shorter in the back and longer in the front) gives the appearance of a lengthened neck and thus extending the entire area. The front of the angled bob typically goes a little below the chin and that is pleasing to the eye.

Above, we mentioned to avoid the unflattering blunt bob that ends at the jawline, but the angled bob, on the other hand, can be a very becoming look for most facial shapes. Pair it with some highlights and you'll be receiving compliments in no time.

Do the Long Shag:

For round face shapes, the shoulder-length layered shag seems to be the "go-to" haircut. The elongated sections of hair force the eyes downward, making the face look thinner. With the shag style, if bangs are included, make sure they are not too thick.

Don’ts:

Don’t Blunt Bangs:

Blunt bangs have been trendy recently, but they don't flatter most face shapes. They make most face shapes appear wider and shorter. They cover your face from the eyes upward, making a much smaller area visible. If you are following the blunt bangs trend, create some volume to the crown area (by backcombing) and it will give the illusion of a longer face.

Don’t Stick Straight Hair:

We realize that we are in a time where we are coming off a major trend for pin-straight, flat-ironed hair, but if you don't have the textbook oval-shaped face, then pin-straight hair really is your adversary.

Long hair will always be something women want to achieve (especially as the majority of men prefer their partners' hair to be on the longer side). Of course, you can still rock the long hair look, just make sure to incorporate long layers to create movement and volume. Perhaps even a splash of color to break up the monotony that can be associated with long hairstyles.

Pixie Cut:

Often times, long hair can overpower a slender face. Narrow faces, usually, are better served with a shorter haircut to highlight the features but if you just have to try a pixie, create layers in the crown so that the eyes are drawn upward and height can lengthen the face. If you are cutting it short, avoid the one-length blunt bob that is exactly chin-length. Go a little shorter or longer to trick the eyes.

We do not believe in beauty rules that confine and pigeonhole women into a box. We believe in selecting a style, cut, and color that works best for your lifestyle. The objective should always be to strive for balance and proportion, in cuts that flatter your face as well as in life. High-maintenance color and cuts that you don't have time to maintain don't help create balance and harmony.

We tried to provide a variety of flattering options for every face shape. Hairstyles are meant to make you feel beautiful and bring out the best in your features while downplaying the ones you prefer to camouflage. Go on, take our facial slimming tips to your favorite hairstylist and let them help conceal the areas you want. Not only creatively, but fashionably!
