Robots Cutting Hair

Q: Will robots ever take over from hairdressers and cut or style people’s hair? What is your opinion about this?

A: Wow… This is the strangest question that I’ve heard in a long time. No, I don’t think that robots will ever realistically replace hairstylists.

This is not to say that robots won’t be able to do it. I’m sure there are already robot-types that can perform basic cuts. But what most of these high-tech wizards don’t get is that people like or dislike other people because of their personalities or souls, whatever you want to call it.

Why have I been going to the same stylist for the past five years? Because she’s become more of a friend than she is only a stylist. You won’t be able to have a sustainable friendship with a robot any more than you’ll be able to have it with your toaster or television.

The second huge thing why stylists will never have to fear being substituted by robots is that robots do not have creative capabilities. Robots are programmed to do things in a specific way under certain conditions. The biggest thing that distinguishes stylists is that they have an intrinsic creativeness about them.

Not anyone can be a great stylist, just like not anyone can be a great artist or dancer. Creativeness comes from within. All people have it to some extent, but the really great stylists have a lot of it. No robot can be creative as all their actions are merely reactions determined by a set of orders that they’ve been programmed with. They cannot think for themselves.
