Successful Color Treatment

A: To ensure a successful, even hair color process, you should start with hair that is clean, dry, and free of heavy product buildup. But you do not want it to be squeaky clean.
However, you should avoid shampooing immediately before your treatment. Washing your hair right before applying color strips away your scalp’s natural sebum (oils). Without this natural protective layer, the chemicals in the dye can cause scalp irritation and itching.
For the best results, the golden rule is to wash your hair 12–24 hours before your color treatment using a gentle shampoo, then rinse thoroughly. If your hair is exceptionally dry, washing it 48 hours prior is even better. This window allows your natural scalp oils to regenerate and protect your skin, while keeping the hair lengths clean and ready for color. Avoid applying any styling products after this final wash.
Your hair also needs to be completely dry before you begin the application. Wet hair dilutes the dye and developer, which can lead to weak or patchy results. Dry hair also makes it much easier to see exactly where you've applied the color, allowing for more precise sectioning and full coverage. The only exception is for specific professional glosses or semi-permanent toners, which are sometimes formulated for damp hair.
In addition to being clean and dry, your hair should be in the best possible condition before coloring. Damaged or overly dry hair is highly porous, meaning it acts like a sponge and can absorb too much pigment, making your hair look muddy or overly dark. Healthy, hydrated hair allows the color to absorb uniformly. If your hair feels compromised, use a nourishing deep conditioning treatment a few days before to help balance the hair’s porosity.
Finally, if you have noticeable mineral buildup from hard water or have recently been swimming in chlorinated water, use a gentle clarifying shampoo a few days prior to your appointment to strip those minerals out, followed by a deep conditioner.
