Q: I have had my hair highlighted for about 10 years. My hairdresser only does the roots but, my hair is still dry. I've used your suggestions on deep moisturizing once a week, and using conditioner in-between shampoos, and this looks like it is really making a difference.

My question is: should I do anything special before my highlighting appointment? I've read that it helps to deep condition right before. Is this good advice?

A: It's actually excellent advice. It is a good idea to make sure your hair is in its best possible condition before you have any chemical service. Particularly since the hair is typically shampooed with a clarifying shampoo which strips the hair prior to a perming service.

It is also excellent for preparation prior to a bleaching service like highlighting because it provides added protection again possible damage to the hair by the bleaching agents used.

I'm thrilled to hear that you have used the advice I offered you to such good effect. I had no doubts that the suggested hair care routine would be beneficial, but it is gratifying when a reader takes the time to acknowledge positive results from the advice we offer. Thank you for brightening my day.
