How to Roll Perm Rods

Q: While perming my hair, when I wrap and get ready to roll the rods do I roll upward or down with the rods? Thank you for your time.

A: When wrapping the hair for a standard perm, the rods are all wrapped in a downward motion on the sides and back. The top section of the hair is wrapped toward the face. You can see a diagram and reference to the method of wrapping a perm here. (The link specifically says wrapping a perm for a body wave, but the only difference is that for a standard perm, smaller rods are used.)

You don’t necessarily have to wrap a perm in a specific pattern. Often, you can achieve very natural-looking results through wrapping a perm in a random pattern. You can create various effects using varied wrapping techniques as well as different types of tools.
