Q: Who creates new and upcoming hair trends? How does a new hair fashion trend start and where does it come from?

A: This question can be answered in a million different ways… There are numerous factors and people or institutions that create or encourage new hair fashion trends.

1. Firstly, there are thousands of very influential self-made “fashionistas” all over the world that have a hand in steering the trends. The incredibly strong influence of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, fashion blogs and the internet as a whole have completely revolutionized the fashion, beauty, and media industry in a way that one would not have been able to fathom ten or twenty years ago.

If you have a knack for fashion, can stand out from the crowd, have serious networking skills and get more than a few lucky breaks, you could well be the next "IT" girl in the fashion industry.

Do you remember the breathtaking success of Tavi Gevinson and her style blog “Fashion Rookie?” The girl was literally twelve years old when she was catapulted to international stardom in the couture realm due to her outlandish and muse-like fashion sense. She’s since retired for the most part from the fashion industry, but her star is still shining bright in the performing platform. Thus fashion blogs and its creators have a big influence on certain factors of the couture and beauty trends.

2. Famous fashion designers, make-up artists, hairdressers and stylists also have a huge influence on the current hottest trends. In a lot of cases, these people work together to create a certain “collected” look for each season. For example, at fashion shows, international catwalk events and fashion shoots, designers, make-up artists, stylists and hairdressers work together to form a certain look that they want to convey at an event in the couture realm. They’ll work on the final look as a “bigger picture”, so everything has to work together.

For example, one summer the laid-back boho look with midriff-baring tops, shorts, headbands, matching laid-back accessories and shoes were all the rage. It’s then only obvious that the hair trend would be in the general area of highlighted, balayage or ombre colored hair (the lighter colors go hand in hand with summer and the natural lightening effect that the sun, sea and wind has on hair). Hair is also styled in laid-back styles such as big beach waves, messy buns or fashionably tousled hair.

3. Celebrities have a huge part to play in the current hair and fashion trends. Most celebrities have personal stylists who mainly determine what they’ll be wearing, but some do choose their own hairstyles and clothes.

A lot of the celebrities are bought up by fashion and beauty giants such as L’Oréal, Schwarzkopf, Marc Jacobs, and Gucci, etc. as brand ambassadors. In this case, the fashion and beauty giants indirectly determine the trends, by choosing what their ambassadors will be wearing at events and fashion or advertorials shoots. Some celebrities form their own clothing lines, (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen), and thus determine trends in their own capacity.

4. Glossy magazines such as Elle, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, etc. also have control over trends to an extent.
