Maintain Short Hair

Q: Are short hairstyles harder to maintain? My hair is a little over shoulder length, I never had short hair before and I am considering going shorter. A short bob (about chin length) or maybe a pixie cut.

What is the easiest to maintain? The bob or the pixie cut? My hair is naturally straight, but I’m afraid that it will curl up when it is shorter.

A: No, contrary to popular belief, in my opinion, short hair is not easier to maintain. This is because of two main reasons; you have to style it every day (especially in the case of pixie cuts), and you have to get it cut into style every second month. Short hair falls flat if you have very straight hair or poofs up if you have curly hair, so it needs to be styled every morning when you get up.

The structure, condition, and amount of hair that you have will all play a part in determining how long it will take you to style your hair. If you have naturally straight hair, you’d get away with it easier though, because you’ll be able to style it quicker, using mostly hair products such as wax. When the structure of the hair is straight, you don’t really need to use heat-style techniques such as blow-drying or straightening the hair to create the desired effect.

If you do decide on going shorter, first go for the bob, which should be easily styled if your hair is straight, and it doesn’t have to get cut so often.

Remember that it takes about one to two weeks for you to get used to your new style, especially when you make such a drastic change such as going from long to short. So give yourself time to get used to the new style, new ways to style your hair and different ways to wear it. Once you’ve gotten used to the new look, you could decide to go shorter. Pixie cuts are beautiful and very popular nowadays.

I can’t help you concerning whether your hair will curl when it’s short, you’ll have to find that one out yourself. But even more curly hair can look great when it’s short. And the cool thing about hair is that it always grows back, so really anyone can afford to take a walk on the wild side and experience different cuts and lengths when they feel like it.

I would suggest that you visit your stylist and ask her/him to do an evaluation of your hair-type, facial shape, etc. and then ask her/him what short styles, including short bobs bob-cuts and pixie-styles would work best for you.

You can also do some research and collect pictures of short styles and cuts that you like best, and ask the stylist which cut and style would suit your individual features best. Remember that at the end of the day, the decision is ultimately yours to make. But it is always a clever move to call in the help and opinion of a qualified stylist to help you along the way, especially if you are unsure or inexperienced with shorter styles, etc.
