Hairdressers and Short Hair

Q: Why do so many female hairdressers have short hair?

A: There’s more than one explanation for this one. The most basic one would be that some women just prefer shorter hair. Short hair has a lot of advantages such as it’s easy to keep it healthy and manageable, because it is cut often. It has the potential to make you look younger if you choose the right style and color to complement your facial shape and complexion, etc.

Another reason could be that most hairstyling or cosmetology students start experimenting with different hair colors and cuts very early in their studies. You should remember that each person absorbs a large amount of the dynamic elements that reign supreme at their place of work.

There’s a lot of creativity, spontaneity and crafting going on in a salon, every minute of the day. This in itself is an encouraging environment to try new things with your own hair and that of your co-students.

This whole process is also mostly encouraged by the senior salon staff, because it helps the students to learn new techniques. Most salons also have their own “look”. Some salons have a majority of stylists that specialize in a more punky or edgy look. The stylists will then project this look by means of their own appearance.

A stylist’s certain appearance will attract a certain clientele basis. Meaning that if you want a stylist to be able to color your hair platinum blonde, look for one who has beautiful healthy platinum blonde hair herself. Thus in effect, a salon will encourage its students and more senior-staff in subtle (and not so subtle), ways to wear their hair in a way to projects the preferred image of the salon.

The other main factor to take into consideration is that cosmetology students have a huge array of professional products at their disposal, so it is normal that they would be inclined to experiment with it. Most salons let the students have their hair cut and colored at the salon that they’re doing their training at, at basic cost price only for the products. This amount is plainly deducted from your salary at the end of the month.

A lot of salons also have an agreement with their students that they’re allowed to have one free process (coloring, treatment, keratin, blow-dry, etc.), done once per month. Consequentially, a lot of the girls’ hair gets fried in the process because of over-eagerness, inexperience, over-processing, or a combination of the three afore-mentioned.

Fried hair has to get chopped off. And once they’ve gone short, it’s hard to grow their hair long again, because then they realize all the different possibilities of colors and cuts they can experiment with. So most take a long time to go back to long hair, and some never do.
