Messy Shaken Look Hair

Short haircut for fine hair

Q: I have very fine hair. I want to wear it short with the back and sides in that messy, sticky out kind of style. My problem is I can't find a product that makes the styling easy.

I find that I am spending 20 minutes with a straightener and then just using a lot of hair spray. I would like to just be able to wash and finger a product through my hair and go. Any suggestions what product I could try?

A: Well, what I would initially suggest is a large curl perm (body wave) with a layered haircut.

The large tools would add waviness to the hair and would enable you to style the hair using your blow-dryer with a diffuser attachment to arrange the hair as you desire. You would simply work a little styling gel into damp hair and scrunch the hair as you dry it for fullness.

By leaving the ends to curl around your fingers as it dries, you create that messy, shaken look with upturned ends in less time than with an un-guarded dryer followed by a flat iron. It will take some practice, but you should master the tricks to create the look you want with little trouble.

After the hair is styled, you can use a light mist of hairspray to give hold to the finished look.
