Itchy Scalp After Hair Extensions

Q: I have just had some hair extensions (wefts sewn in) and my scalp is incredibly itchy. I don't want to have them removed, but it's driving me insane. Is there anything I can do to relieve this itchiness?

A: The important thing is to determine the cause of the itch. If it is a simple matter of dryness and subsequent itch, then you can use a moisturizing conditioner applied directly to the scalp and rinsed away with lukewarm water, followed by a cool water rinse.

However, if the itch persists or you have any other signs of scalp irritation, you may be having an allergic reaction, in which case you will want to see a doctor and have the extensions removed. Remember, even if you have had extensions before, you may have developed new allergies.

If however, you don't show signs of other irritation, and the use of conditioner doesn't soothe the itch, you can find liquid-form anti-itch medications available over the counter. These generally come in spray bottles and can be strayed on, or you can use a cotton swab to apply the liquid to the scalp. Once again, if the itch persists for more than two days, consult your doctor.
