Shu Shu

Gothic men's hairstyle

When it comes to creating exceptional hair colour and the hottest catwalk looks for men, a hairdresser from Shu Shu in Hull has proved she is among the best in the UK having made it through to the Grand Final of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy 2007.

Susan Vargas beat off stiff competition from thirty-nine salons across the North Eastern region to clinch her place in the Grand Final in London on Monday 21st May. She is now one step closer to winning the prestigious L’Oréal Men’s Image Award and a once-in-a-lifetime prize that could see her jetting over to New York to produce a photo spread for fashion bible Vogue.

At the North Eastern Regional Final her live hairdressing skills were put under the spotlight by a panel of top hairdressers judges including Errol Douglas, Sean Dawson, David Lambert and Dylan Bradshaw. Industry luminary and guest judge Sean Dawson commented; “The clothes styling was some of the best seen so far on this tour, making it a tough region to judge. There were interesting cuts and some really clever colouring techniques.”

L'Oréal Colour Trophy

“We were photographing the ladies for the L’Oréal Colour Trophy and it wasn’t going as I had hoped,” explains Susan of her winning entry. “I decided to shoot my men's image ideas too. Researching online, I had noticed that 1960s-inspired styling is a key upcoming trend, so I used The Rolling Stones era as inspiration, then added my own twist of modernity with gothic darks in the hair. When I saw how it looked on camera I decided to enter the Men’s Image category – everything just came together beautifully.”

“I actually didn’t realise I had won for a minute or two,” admits Susan of her winning moment. “There was a whole minibus of staff next to me who leapt out of their seats shouting and the truth sunk in. I was so shocked I couldn’t even smile or speak! It is an absolute dream of mine to win at the L’Oréal Grand Final - I will continue working until I have experienced that moment.”
