The month of May brings about much excitement in high schools all across the United
States. May officially kicks of prom season. Senior prom is an event that requires a girl
to have a beautiful dress, matching shoes, exquisite jewelry, and an elegant hairdo, in
order for her to be the belle of the ball.
I recently sat in a hair salon waiting an hour for my stylist to finish an up do for a prom
goer. The girl sat statuesque in the chair as the stylist produced dozens of curly
ringlets to form some sort of flower shaped bun on her head. A few thousand bobby
pins later, the do was complete and finished off with at least a half a can of hairspray.
When the girl left the salon, I felt a bit sorry for her. She went to great lengths to be
beautified, however her hair looked much better before she sat in the styling chair.
She then headed over to the makeup counter at a store downstairs. I shuddered to
think about what they would do to her pretty face.
I started to think about my senior prom about thirteen years ago, and I realized that
prom hairstyles haven't changed much over the years. Girls still either have "big" prom
hair, buns that are pinned back too tightly, or too many stiff ringlets. I wish that I knew
then what I know now.
Overly hair sprayed curls, big hairdos, and too-tight buns are not very attractive.
Instead of having the traditional prom hair of years past, why not go for a new fresh
look that represents the style of the times? Straight, sleek hair is definitely high
fashion these days. It would also look great with an elegant, form-fitting dress. Long,
loose curls that drape over the shoulders are a wonderful style choice for an off-the-
shoulder dress with a full skirt. There are also quite a few up do's that would look
wonderful with any type of dress. However, they should be loose and light instead of
tight and forced back with hairsprays and pins.
I think the most important thing for girls to understand while trying to find the perfect
prom hairstyle is that they should try to look as less "made-up" as possible. The more
natural you look...the more natural and comfortable you will feel.
