Tape-in Hair Extensions

Next we have tape-in hair extensions. This method involves wefts/strings of hair extensions that have been pre-taped/glued at the root-part of the weft/string. The tape-in hair extensions are then "taped" in a sandwich-like method to thin sections of hair, creating a seamless effect. This is a semi-permanent method, meaning the extensions can last you anywhere from six to twelve weeks before they have to be removed or re-attached.

The pros of this method are that it can be done extremely quickly, with a potentially seamless end result as long as you make use of a qualified and experienced hairstylist. The damage to the hair is also less with this method, as the movement of the hair at the roots is restricted, thus avoiding knots and tangles. The glue used with the tape-in extensions also tends to be much more user- and hair-friendly than the melted keratin/glue used in the first method.

The downsides are that most of the time synthetic or low-grade human hair is used to manufacture this kind of extensions, meaning that very little or no heat must be used when styling the hair. Synthetic hair also cannot be colored, and it is not advised to curl straight synthetic extensions or to straighten curled synthetic extensions.

Because of the taped roots, it can be difficult or painful to tie the hair up or to style the hair in updos, buns, braids, etc. These tape-in extensions also tend to fall out more easily than the bonded or braided types, especially if the stylist is inexperienced, uses low-quality extensions or if the clients tends to be rough with their hair.

Clip-in Hair Extensions

Last, we have the clip-in hair extensions, which are quickly becoming the most popular choice of hair extensions. These extensions are attached to the client's natural hair by means of clips that are attached to the client's natural hair's roots. The hair extensions are attached to the hair in the morning/before a big event, and then taken out at night or after the party.

These extensions can be attached by a stylist, especially for big events such as weddings or proms. The stylist knows best how to insert the extensions to ensure that it doesn’t pull at the scalp, nor will it become loose and/or fall out. Stylists are also trained and experienced in performing styling methods to make the extensions seem seamless and completely natural. But most of the time, the wearer puts in their own extensions, and with time and practice, they become almost as good at it as most stylists!

Clip-in extensions have become very accessible and affordable, and since the wearer can put them in themselves, this method has grown in popularity and only seems to be becoming more popular. Clip-in extensions come in various forms and types.

You get a full head of extensions which are divided into 8 pieces of different widths, attached to the nape area, the occipital bone area, the crown area, and the sides of the head. These extensions also come in either a regular or extra thick version, to cater to people with thin or very thick hair.

A one-piece, weft-like hair extension is also available, which is attached with clips just above the occipital bone area. This kind of extension is primarily used to add thickness and length at the back of the hair. These extensions are very easy to insert as it is only one piece, but your hair will have to be below shoulder-length for it to look natural and convincing.

Strands of colored clip-in hair extensions are also used a lot in creative styles and special events such as weddings, proms, parties, or dress-up occasions. These colors can vary from natural colors such as red, blonde, or brown, to electric colors such as pink, purple, green, blue, etc. If you want to make a statement or totally change the appearance of your hair, without causing any damage to it; this is the way you should do it.
