Mannish Short Hair
A: Short hair can look overly mannish on a woman for a few reasons.
Firstly, pixie cuts/short hair tends to work best with oval or heart shaped faces. It inclines not to look very good with overly round faces, as it makes the face look even more round. There are always exceptions though and should be discussed with your stylist if you’re unsure whether a style will complement you face shape or not.

Thirdly, the color of a short hairstyle is really important. I cannot stress this enough. You can’t think that you’re going to look chic and sexy if you have your hair cut short, but keep your hair in a natural, dull or mousy color. Short hairstyles and pixie cuts need color. It’s a punchy, foxy hairstyle. You must have it colored to make it really pop.
Solid base colors work really well with short styles, as it showcases the hairstyle and complements the client’s face and neck profile. You’ll see that most hairstyle books showcase their short hairstyles in solid base colors such as black, red, brown or even platinum.
You can also vamp it up by having subtle or not so subtle highlights put into the bangs and top area, especially the area around the face. This softens the look, while also giving the client a more youthful appearance.
Lastly, you HAVE to learn how to style your short hairstyle correctly, and you have to style it every day. If you have your hair cut short and fail to style it, it will look ill-maintained and mannish. A lot of women make the mistake of cutting their hair short, with the idea that they won’t have to spend any time on their hair anymore.
Long hair can be pulled into a ponytail or bun when you’re running late. But with short hair; you’ll have to whip out the wax or other styling products and style your hair, even when you’ve overslept horribly. You won’t be taking an hour to blow-dry your hair like you do with very long hair, but you’ll have to carve out a few minutes every morning to style your wispy tresses.
