Bob or Pixie Cut for a Career Woman

Q: What is more professional for a career woman? A bob or a pixie cut?

A: I’m fond of both hairstyles, but I’d probably go for the pixie cut. A bob needs to be well maintained, meaning colored and/or highlighted or lowlighted on a regular basis, as well as trimmed and washed with salon quality shampoo and conditioner.

A deep penetrating treatment at the salon should also be done every few months to ensure optimal gloss and health. This, coupled with regular styling, will ensure that your bob looks sophisticated and well groomed.

Unfortunately, a lot of career women don’t have the time for all this. Their time is a precious and very limited resource, not really to be wasted on hours in the salon. This is why the pixie is probably the best bet. Pixie cuts tend to need less time maintaining and styling, provided you keep to the basic rules.

A pixie cut MUST be cared for properly. If it’s not, it will easily end up looking boyish or uncultured. Firstly, make sure that your pixie cut is colored with a color that suits your skin-tone. I also always recommend having thin highlights added to a pixie cut to ensure that the cut looks professional and multi-dimensional.

You’ll have to get your roots covered every 4-6 weeks at the salon, but because the hair is so short, the salon-time is really short and can easily be done over the weekend or in the evening. Keep your color well-maintained, this is a prerequisite in keeping your pixie looking chic and stylish.

Secondly, you must learn how to style your pixie cut properly. This won’t take long and is really easy, but you’ll have to do it. There is nothing as unattractive as a woman who has her hair cut short, and then just leaves it looking flat and lifeless.

When you have your hair cut into a pixie, first do some research on which type of pixie you’d like. I’m always fond of a very choppy, texturized pixie with longer bangs and sides. This makes the cut more versatile, softens the face and tends to make the woman look more slick and sophisticated. Have a look at examples from Elsa Pataky, Jennifer Lawrence, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, etc.

When you’ve found your perfect cut, take the picture with you to the salon and first discuss what effect that specific cut will have on you face and overall look. Also discuss the different options available concerning the color and highlight or lowlights. When you’re happy with all the above, you’re ready for the move.

When it’s done, ask the stylist to show you exactly how to style the cut, and which products to use. Keep a sharp eye on exactly what he/she does. Ask her/him to explain both the process, movements and the reason for what they’re doing. After you’re armed with the information and right products, practice the styling a few times at home to ensure that you can style your hair perfectly as well. Have your hair cut on a Friday and then use the weekend to experiment with styling.
