Hair Colour Stripper
Q: I have recently started doing my Level 3 Hairdressing NVQ at college. I have been given an assignment about finding the
hazards with using Colour Stripper. I have never used Colour stripper and I have only found one online which is by L'oreal. I can't
seem to find the hazards about it, only if I want to purchase it. I would very much appreciate any help you could give me regarding
this problem. Thank you for you time.
A: Well, the biggest hazard in using a color stripper is that the service will usually remove not only artificial haircolor but will
also further remove the natural pigmentation in the hair as well. The results are typically a very flat, dull beige color. It creates
a blank canvas on which to apply a new color, but the results of the new color application tend to be flat as well.
The problem is that most color services use formulas that are somewhat translucent and are
designed to keep some measure of the natural variation of shade in the individual strands of hair. When the color stripper removes
the “artificial color” it also strips some (or more) of the pigment that provides the natural variation. This effect can be more
problematic when the color stripper is used on hair colored using a lifting haircolor.
Color strippers are typically bleaching formulas designed with extra conditioning and buffering
agents to help keep from damaging the hair. Even so, you MUST use caution before using color strippers on hair that has been heavily
processed.
