Stylish Low Maintenance Male Hairstyle
Q: First and foremost, I would like to thank you for having such a wonderful web-resource that provides hair information for
all types and grades of hair.
Now on to the question ...
I'm an eighteen year old, male college student, and hair has always been a concern. I've used texturizers, curls, and I currently have
cornrows in my hair. So far, I have been most displeased with most available hair styles that are open to me. I am extremely unhappy
with cornrows, as I have a "tender" head. What recommendations do you have? I dislike cornrows, the most, as they are most
unprofessional and often have a hip-hop or rap association. I think I would like to go for a more natural look....perhaps some sort
of dreadlock variation....one that requires less maintenance and work. Not that I am unwilling to properly take care of my hair, it's
just that the previously mentioned (and tried) hairstyles required a lot of time and effort. I just want something professional,
easy, and low maintenance. I don't exactly have a lot of time to spend on hair, as I usually take about eighteen hours per semester. I
also do a lot of modeling (both runway, and print), so a slightly stylish, and somewhat charming hairstyle would be nice. Ha! I know I
may be asking a lot, and I do apologize. My battle with hair as been long, leaving me exhausted and with a losing streak. I appreciate
your time, and anticipate your response.
A: As I hear you describe your situation, it’s obvious that you would like a style that is simple to maintain, yet looks good.
Unfortunately, this does limit your options. There is always the choice to wear your hair natural. A close-cropped, natural style with
tapered edges can look very chic and sophisticated. All you need is to find a good stylist who can give you the style you desire.
Another option - if you want a more relaxed look - is the new “S-curl” relaxers. These generally
offer a gentle relaxing of the hair’s natural wave pattern and helps make the hair more manageable. Combined with a good cut, the
“S-curl” styling can give you a sleek, well-groomed appearance.
The other styling options you mention, dreads, braids, etc. all do have their benefits, but also
require a bit more in the way of care and maintenance. Keep in mind that these are good choices for you, as long as you are willing to
commit to the time and effort to maintain them, in addition to finding a good stylist to perform the initial and subsequent services.
I know you mention that you currently have cornrows which you dislike because of a tender scalp. I
wonder if the displeasure with the style is not partly due to an overzealous stylist doing the braids. You might prefer a stylist who
can take your sensitive scalp into consideration and give you less tightly wound braids. In addition, the concern of the association
of the braided style with hip-hop or rap associations, perhaps a micro-braid style done in short segments would be an interesting
alternative?
