Silver Hair

Q: The back of my hair from crown down behind ears to below the occipital bone is a somewhat pleasant silver and I would be pleased if all my hair were that color. It isn’t. The remainder of my hair is dark and stubborn; it takes two applications of over-the-counter product to bring it up to nearly white. I decided no more bleaching/coloring. It isn’t working.
My skin is golden. The overall look of my hair in front is gun metal. It looks awful. I live outdoors, I’m suntanned. My hair doesn’t match me or my wardrobe. When not bleached, in my adult years, the natural color was golden brown. I wear it outrageously short. I’m 5’ 2”, size 7, I’m 65.
My lifestyle is a “wet,” either from pool, lake, or sweat while working in my yard in the hot Alabama sun. My idea is to use a temp color such as golden blond. In preparation for that, I applied {brand name omitted} bashful blond (no golden on the shelf) which is still very dull although it changed the tone from gray to a dull blond. I can’t stand dull; I need to be a bit outrageous.
I’m choosing blond because I don’t want white roots on the gray part. I know I can’t use anything containing a bleaching agent. I’m now asking you for your suggestions. Thank you for your attention to my epistle.

A: I recommend that you first of all stop using over-the-counter products until you have had enough time for your hair to grow out and the damage hair can be trimmed away. The hair turning “gun metal” in color is a sign that the hair may be close to the breaking point and should be treated with care.

My best recommendation is that you see a professional immediately for a color filler service to help you get a color you can live with while your hair grows out. Since the hair is short, you should be able to get to a point where you can do it yourself again relatively soon (depending on the actual length).

I suggest a medium to dark blonde tone being used for the color filler. If you use a color that is lighter than your natural shade, you will achieve a look that is more natural and the darker natural hairs will appear as lowlights.

You can use one of the “color brighteners” if you like to shampoo and condition the hair to make the hair appear less dull.
