Hair

Give me down to there hair
Shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy
Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

If you are over the age of 30, or well versed in 70's culture you will recognize these lyrics.
They are from a musical that almost turned into an anthem for rebellious teens and "hippies" named
"Hair". So what is so important about hair? And especially women's hair. Why do so many men find
long hair on women not only attractive but somewhat sexually stimulating?

In Western societies there are specific "rules", so to speak, regarding what men find attractive
in women's hair wear. There should not be hair where hair does not belong. In other words, no
mustaches or beards, no armpit hair, no leg hair, and two distinct eyebrows. Long blonde hair is
considered to be the epitome of beauty. It has long been believed that the ability to grow long
healthy looking hair is an indication of continuous health of the individual growing it.

In long ago years, having long hair not only signaled strong health but was also a sign of youth.
Along with youth came virginity and availability which became very admirable. Men could tell with
one look whether or not the woman, or young lady, would bear him any children. In those days, the
more children to work the farm, the better the crop.

But we no longer live in the days of the large family farms and large broods of children. In fact,
the average American family consists of 2.3 children and with the advances in medical technology
fertility, and super fertility are no longer an absolute deal breaker. So why are men still attracted to
women with long locks?

One theory is that long hair is for little girls and many men want to be dominant in a relationship,
so a woman with long hair triggers something in the forebrain of a man that she will be submissive
like a child. In others it manifests as a fetish. A fetish is a sexual fixation on a concept, object, or
body part, in this case hair. A person with a fetish feels a compulsive need to use the object in order
to obtain sexual gratification and cannot achieve pleasure without it. There is usually a psychological
connection between the individual's fetish and important events in the past. Possibly the man's
mother had long hair - if you want to go Freud - the man as a baby played with and was aroused by
the mother's hair while nursing. I know, a lot of psycho babble.

So, your hair doesn't go the distance. How long will it take to get it to that long ago desired length?
Well here is the breakdown. Only 25% of your total hair is on your head and it grows about
0.25-0.4mm every day. That equals out to .0125 mm/hour, 0.3 mm/day, 2.1 mm/week, 1 cm/month,
and 12 cm/year. For you yanks that is about 6 inches. Don't get too excited, not all of your hair grows
at the same time and you lose about 100 hairs every day. Hairs to you!
