Love and Loathing

A Love Hate Relationship With Fashion Magazines

I must confess that I have a love hate relationship with magazines, especially fashion ones.
I am one of those suckers that falls for the flashy "get flat abs fast" and "your perfect haircut" covers.
When I am not pulling my kids away from the candy, I am usually trying to decide which mag to throw
on the conveyer belt before the grocery total is figured. I do it half in shame, I am not a teenager or
even a young twenty something anymore. According to society I am way too old to even care
anymore about high fashion or flat abs! But….I do, I admit it, I really do. I want to wear all of the cool
clothes and have the right hairstyle for my hair type and the right makeup and be sure that I am
wearing hourglass clothes instead of apple or pear shaped clothes. I am actually a little embarrassed
to admit that this all matters to me.

So the last time that I ran to the store to buy all the regular stuff; bread, butter, milk…candy, you
know the staples - I picked up one of those high fashion, "Your Best Haircut!" magazines. I rushed to
get home to see what my best haircut should actually be. I am currently between styles and trying
to grow out my hair ... SCARY!!! I put the kids to bed and settled in for some elightening reading on
the couch with an ice cold soda. I flipped through the pages looking for the right one; 114,116,128,
144. Here we go, I was ready to put my stylist's number on speed dial because I was sure that this
was going to be good.

photo of lady with short hair         Boy, was I wrong! When I finally found the article, after flipping through one
hundred and some odd pages of outrageous fashion, I was more than a little
disappointed. There was a little bit of entertainment to the part where they ripped
on celebrities for big hair mistakes. It was fun until I realized that I was currently,
or had recently, made those same mistakes. So, OK I was kind of feeling like a big
loser. No, not a big loser, a big OLD loser. But, I read on to find out how I needed to
fix my hair, good hair always makes me feel better.

OK, there is some type of graph where you are required to have a master's
degree in statistical analysis before you are able to decipher it. So, once I figured
it out and "entered" in my hair length and type I couldn't wait to see how beautiful I was going to be.
First picture-cute. Second picture - similar to the first. Third picture-very similar to the second.
I started to notice a trend. All four pictures of my best style for my hair length and texture were almost
identical. This kind of made me curious so I started checking out the other sections.

Just as I expected, they were all pretty much the same cut and style. It didn't matter whether you
had short and fine hair or long and curly hair. What a disappointment!!! I was almost positive that this
$2.00 magazine would be the answer to all of my hairstyle worries. Why shouldn't it, I mean it's not
like they don't know me personally. OK, so I should have known that a piece of paper, or even
hundreds of them, couldn't solve my current hair quandaries. This made me realize how important my
stylist is.

Magazines are great for getting ideas, but don't totally rely on them for your final cut. These types
of articles do not take into consideration that huge cowlick that you have right on the back of your
head, or the widow's peak at the front of your hairline. It is true that I have short and wavy hair which
was one of the categories, but it said nothing of thick, sometimes frizzy, and fast growing hair.
All of these also describe my hair. I have decided to start saving my magazine money and using it to
pay my stylist for a haircut made for me. I won't buy anymore mags ... unless I really can get flatter abs
fast!
