Q: I have been using L’Oreal’s Extra Light Natural Blond “Les Blondiness” for a number of years on my formerly natural blond hair that was now light brown. Well, I’m 60 now and my hair is graying at the temples.
I’ve notices that the hair coloring doesn’t seem to hide the grey like it does to the rest of my hair that is light brown. Is there some technique or anything to add to the L’Oreal to help make the grey less color resistant?
A: Usually, haircolor that lightens the hair has less trouble with resistant hair than other types (demi-permanent and semi-permanent, specifically) yet, as you well know, some gray hair can be VERY resistant.
Other than looking for a haircolor specifically designed to deal with gray hair coverage – which can present its own problems in finding a shade that matches what you’ve been using – you can opt for an additive
that will help your chosen hair coloring penetrate the gray hair more readily.
In particular, you want to visit your local beauty supply store and look for a product called “Gray Magic”. It comes in small single-use ampoules and may be sold individually,
or may be available in multi-ampoule packaging. Gray Magic contains ingredients that assist in opening the cuticle layer of the hair to allow the color to penetrate and deposit properly.
If “Gray Magic” isn’t available in your area, ask the store personnel for a similar hair product. They can usually direct you to the equivalent product that is available where you live.
