How to Cut Jagged Layers

Q: My son likes long hair styles. He now would like jagged layers. Is this something I am able to do on my own; and if so, how do I do it?

jagged layers cutting graphic A: If you have any practice at all cutting hair, you may be able to create jagged layers fairly easily. One method that can work is to take the hair in evenly portioned segments (for example: 1-1/2 inches by 1-1/2 inches) and cutting them to roughly the same lengths using a razor tool. You need to use a downward motion with the razor to create the layers. You don’t have to be 100-percent accurate, but do keep in mind the principles of balance and proportion for the cut.

Be sure to buy a razor tool with a guard, as the razors involved are very sharp and the inexperienced can seriously injure themselves. If you don’t feel comfortable using a razor, you can try to do a similar maneuver with the scissors, but it requires using the scissors in a partly-open position and chipping away at the segments at an angle. Attached you will find a graphic to illustrate some basic angles and elevations to get a jagged-layer look.
